Sonu started his career in the movie Janum, 1990 as a playback singer who was flopped. After that, he got a big break as a playback singer in Gulshan Kumar’s movie (Aaja Meri Jaan) and Accha Sila Diya Tune from Bewafa Sanam in 1996.

He also started to host a singing competing show on television Sa Re Ga Ma, and this show became the most popular show at this time. After that he never stops and sang Sandese Aate Hai” from Border (1997); Yeh Dil, Deewana” in the film Pardes (1997).

When Kumar Sanu was diagnosed with throat cancer in (1998) then his career got boosted.

He has released a number of pop albums including Mausam, Sapnay Ki Baat, Kismat, Deewana, Jaan, Yaad, Chanda Ki Doli, and Colours of Love, as well as a Punjabi album ‘Pyar’.

Besides this, he also hosted Kisme Kitna Hai Dum and also judge on Indian Idol.
