She started her career in the Telugu movie name Rangula Ratnam1966 as a child actress. She likes acting since her childhood. Debut movie Godali CID which is a Kannada movie, and Hindi debut movie from Sawan Bhadon in 1970. From the movie in Ghar,1978 she got a new image in Bollywood industry and on behalf of better performance, potryaing she first time nominated for a Filmfare Award. In the movie Ghar 1978, Rekha played a rape victim role.
