In 1971, he did as a supporting actor in the movie Anand with star cast Rajesh Khanna, and this movie also gave him Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor. He did Parwana as the negative role and after that narrated a part of the film Bawarchi.

In the year 1973, he played the role of the inspector in the movie Zanjeer, through which he awarded with Best Actor Award after the success of this movie she got married to Jaya Bhaduri.

He did also a comedy film Chupke Chupke with starrer Dharmendra in 1975. After he appeared in Deewar (1975) which was the biggest hit and bagged its position number 4th in India Times movies, besides this, he also won the best-supporting actor award through this movie.

In 1982, during the shooting of Coolie set he got an injury during a fight scene with co-actor Puneet Issar.
